Relationship Chart

In order for a true "blood" relationship to exist, two people must have a "common" ancestor. In the chart below, the "common ancestor" is located in Box 1 in the TOP left-hand corner.

Notice that Box 1 is COMMON to both the HORIZONTAL scale going to the top-right and the VERTICAL scale traveling downward on the left. Box 1 is where one would "plug in" the known common ancestor of two individuals to calculate their relationship.

After putting the name of the known common ancestor in Box 1, follow the scale on top (HORIZONTAL) going from Box 1 to the right. Put the first individual's name in the box that PROPERLY describes their relationship to the ancestor in Box 1. For example, Great Grandson.

Now, follow the scale moving downward (VERTICAL) from Box 1 on the left-hand side, and place the second individual's name in the box that PROPERLY describes their relationship to the ancestor in Box 1. For example, Great Granddaughter.

Now, make a path downward from the top box and across from the left-hand box. The BOX where the top (HORIZONTAL) and the left-hand side (VERTICAL) scales meet is the true relationship of the individuals! In our example, the relationship would be that of SECOND COUSINS.

A TRUE example using my dad's first cousin Fred Moring and my daughter Shelby is shown in a chart at the bottom of this page.
