The Family Name around the Map! In 1666, John Mooring received a King's Grant for land in Surry County. The description of the grant directly correlates to the place called Mooring, Virginia The 1820 map of Prince Edward County shows"Morings" at the spot where GGG grandfather Caswell settled. This area became known as "Moran" because of the way the locals pronounced Moring...."MO-ran". My father grew up there and the land remains in the family (Gibbs), still producing tobacco and timber. Moringsville, North Carolina It's not on the map anymore, but at one time "Moringsville" was a stagecoach stop in Chatham County. Several Morings from the ancestral home in Surry Co., Virginia migrated to Chatham County prior to 1800, including John Moring, a Revolutionary War Veteran. Moringsville was located at the point where Northeast Chatham County and Northwest Wake County meet. Approximately 15 miles N.W. of Morrisville, N.C. UPDATE!!! I have just received an 1870 MAP of Chatham County showing Moringsville. I will post it as time permits Near the Mississippi River is Mooring, Tennessee! Northeast of San Antonio is Mooring, Texas! Northwest of Shreveport is Mooringsport, Louisiana!
